IELTS, TOEFL or PTE: Which Test Should You Take?
Most universities in Australia, the USA and Canada accept IELTS, TOEFL and PTE equally. The right choice depends on how you work best under exam conditions.
IELTS
Available on paper or computer. The Speaking section is a face-to-face interview with a real examiner, which suits candidates who are more comfortable talking to a person than a microphone.
TOEFL
Fully computer-based and heavily academic in tone. Speaking is recorded, and the test rewards structured note-taking during longer lectures and passages.
PTE
Fully computer-based with AI scoring and the fastest results, often within a few days. It suits candidates who type comfortably and want a quick turnaround before an application deadline.
Practical advice
Take a diagnostic mock of at least two tests before committing. Candidates who dislike speaking to a microphone usually score better on IELTS, while confident typists often do better on PTE. Also confirm which tests your target universities and the destination country's visa authority accept, as these can differ.
